Reasons

The reasons you run into this error while using the verify-rebuild utility are mentioned below-

  • The company file has been severely damaged, or the external drive containing the file is currently disconnected from the system.

  • The data file name contains invalid characters not supported in QuickBooks.

  • The software lacks the %temp% folder permissions, which can cause issues while the software runs.

Solutions

The following techniques are effective in stopping issues from developing while rebuilding a data file-

Solution 1- Set up the %temp% folder permissions correctly

As its name suggests, the %temp% folder is a storage of temporary files of the PC applications. The applications retrieve the files directly from the folder instead of searching them on the hard disk. QuickBooks might develop this issue if it fails to access the %temp% folder due to insufficient permissions. You must configure the %temp% folder permissions as mentioned below to ensure the software doesn’t face any problems. Apply these steps-

  • Type %temp% in the search panel and press Enter.

  • Go inside the %temp% folder and right-click on a blank space.

  • Select Properties in the options list and navigate to the Security tab.

  • Select the user account you are logged in with and tap Edit.

  • Single-click the checkbox beside Full Control to mark it.

  • Hit Apply and click Ok before rebuilding the data file in QuickBooks again.

If the error still stops you from using the utility, try the next solution.

Solution 2- Edit the company file’s name and fix the damage

QuickBooks can also develop this issue if the company file gets severely damaged and unsupported for QuickBooks. Invalid characters in the company file are also a reason to worry, as the software doesn’t allow some characters or spaces between the file name and extension. Use these steps-

  • Run the QuickBooks tool hub and click the Company file issues menu.

  • Tap Run QuickBooks File Doctor Tool and click Browse to select your company file.

  • Enter your QB Admin password to run the tool and wait until the data file is repaired.

After the data file is completely repaired, you need to make some changes to its name.

  • Go to the location of your company file and right-click on it.

  • Select Rename and remove <,>,|, etc from the file name.

  • Also, make sure there’s no space at the beginning or end of the file name and save the file.
